5 Ways to Stop Rushing and Start Living Your Life!

Do you ever feel like you are rushing to the next stage of your life and feel disappointed when it takes longer than expected to get there? It seems like we are all holding our breath until we get where we’re already going. We are so used to instant gratification that we expect our lives to change overnight. Although it is definitely possible, it’s usually the exception to the rule and if we are constantly rushing to the next chapter, we miss the entire point of our current experience – the here and now.

The people we’re meeting, the lessons we’re learning and the uniqueness of today. It only comes around once and can never be duplicated!

Whether you deeply want to switch careers, get married or move to a new home; you won’t get there any faster by counting down the minutes till you arrive. You’ll only feel frustration and negativity towards yourself and your dreams. The truth is that there is no point in getting there faster. It is already set up in your cards and you are not in control of the time. Imagine you are on an airplane going to Hawaii, would you decide to jump out and swim there because the plane ride is taking too long? Instead of enjoying a relaxing ride and knowing you’ll arrive at your destination when the time comes you are making yourself suffer and dramatically extending the arrival time. That would be insane and incredibly harsh. (Hint: you are being too hard on yourself and your personal experience.)

You will get there exactly when you are meant to and not a moment sooner.

So let’s work on how to actually enjoy the process rather than insisting we should jump over it and miss the magic of the present.I have put together my favorite ways to stop rushing and start living right here:

1. Use affirmations.

Create space and trust by remembering that you are exactly where you should be in your life. I like to use the affirmation “I am always in the perfect place at the perfect time.” By repeating this to yourself out loud every morning you are beginning to shift your false perception that you “should” be further along on your journey.

2. Put a new frame on your current situation.

Begin to bring awareness towards the stage you are currently in and reframe your notions about it. For instance if you are at the beginning of your new career or relationship how can you appreciate this time rather than judge it? Look back on past experiences and acknowledge how special it was to be at that starting point and how far you have come since then.

3. Feel into your body.

When your ego starts to rush you and you feel frustrated, discouraged and angry feel into your body. Where do you feel the pressure or tightness in your body? Can you breathe into it and create space in order to calm your mind? Instead of fighting your ego and telling it to stop, try going around it by tapping into the wisdom of your body. Release and relax into the tightness in order to access your inner truth (there is nowhere to rush.)

4. Rewrite your time story.

Have you ever thought about your perceptions and ideas of time? You are the creator of your experience and if you are always feeling rushed it is because of the story you tell yourself around time. It may have been ingrained in you since childhood that there is not enough time or that if you don’t hurry you are going to miss your opportunity but you don’t have to stick to it. You have the choice to rewrite your beliefs about time. Take a moment now to write out your limiting beliefs about time, release them onto the paper and then tear it up and throw it away. Then create a new story. Include anything you wish would be true about time and feels good.

5. Do activities that make you stay present.

There are certain activities that you actually have to give your full attention to in order to accomplish successfully. For example, if you try to balance, juggle, count anything, or hold a difficult yoga pose; it is almost impossible to think about anything else. Which is a great practice for getting out of our heads!
