Overcoming Your Fears Around Change

“Change can be scary, but you know what’s even scarier? Allowing fear to stop you from growing, evolving and progressing.” Mandy Hale

The winds of transition and change are constantly appearing in our lives whether we realize them or not. There are times we are dying to feel and experience some changes and other times when we are gripping on so tight to what is so we can avoid the fear and uncertainty that arises with changes.

I am right in the middle of this experience right now. Looking around my condo with half of my stuff in boxes and anticipating big exciting and scary changes. My husband and I are moving next week and we are also “surprise” expecting our first child together!

Each day we have the opportunity to make small changes to how we act, react and spend our time. We are the creators of our reality.

As I look around I am conscious to how I have played a role in these upcoming changes. And I am also aware of all the thoughts swirling around in my head about the future. What will it be like and how will it work out? What are the biggest changes that I can prepare for and what are the parts that I need to let go of and trust instead of planning? The list goes on and I am sure you are familiar with these thoughts yourself.

It doesn’t matter if the change or transition you are experiencing is around moving, divorcing, planning a trip or trying on a new perspective.

My clients always want to know “how do I get there and what should I do next?” and here I am noticing that I am doing the same thing. I know what I want, I know what feels good and now I just want to have the perfect plan for a smooth ride! Doesn’t that sound peachy?

What if this quote were true…

“It may be that when we no longer know which way to go that we have come to our real journey” ― Wendell Berry

Of course the truth is that transitions can be scary and messy. They can feel like we are the new kid at school trying to find our class and make new friends. In other words, uncomfortable and unstable. But if we could perfectly plan everything than it wouldn’t be real life.

At the same time, they create the openings and new beginnings for the things that we want and dream of in life. The unknown carries so much possibility and beauty. Without endings we couldn’t have beginnings and evolve as humans.

So, I have a question for you. It requires a yes or no answer…

Are you ready to loosen your grip and discover what else is possible for you?

If you answered YES, let’s talk about what we can do to overcome these fear and actually move forward:

  1. Imagine

Use your imagination to create the best possible outcome. What if things worked out as you imagined? What if you were on the right track to something amazing?

  1. Focus

Each time your mind goes towards fearful thinking. Re-shift your focus to the bigger picture. Your big why and the positive possibilities that exist out there.

  1. Intention

Set an intention. We don’t always get to perfectly choose the changes that arise but if we are aware of them we can bring awareness to the experience by choosing how we want to show up and experience it.

  1. Trust

I wish there was a way around this one as I know that many of us struggle with it. But the truth is this one is the jack pot. Lean into trust. Look back at when things worked out and remember that leaps of faith got you through.
